Ever since the release of her 2010 debut, Suburban Nature, 26-year-old Texan Sarah Jaffe has been synonymous with a certain kind of female-fronted acoustic alt-folk—she’s often compared to Jessica Lea Mayfield and Sharon Van Etten, two singer-songwriters known for mixing wistful melodies with just a hint of raw, grungelike snark. That was until “Glorified High,” the drum machine–laden first single from Jaffe’s sophomore album The Body Wins, which will be released April 24 and takes her music in a completely new direction.

Before The Body Wins, Sarah Jaffe had released one full-length album and a pair of EPs, all of which showcase a moody, laconic, singer-songwriterly country-folk sound. They're each enormously promising — from the early gem "Even Born Again" to the breakthrough ballad "Clementine," all the way through a strangely sweet cover of Drake's "Shut It Down" — but none suggest the stylistic leap Jaffe takes on The Body Wins.

Kirtland Records to Release John Dufilho Compilation

John Dufilho writes songs. Lots of them. More than eight albums' worth since 2000 — five with his rock-inclined The Deathray Davies, two with his indie pop-focused I Love Math, and a solo alt-rock album he released under his own name in 2006.

On his first full-length album since 2008, Dufilho has indeed taken a high-minded route: To be released under his new John Singer Sergeant moniker this latest affair is a mostly collaborative effort; content to resign himself to a backing role, Dufilho recorded the 14-track album's backing music entirely by himself and invited a cast of big-name musician acquaintances and close family friends alike to replace him on lead vocals. Included in this crop of guests contributors are Ben Kweller, The Apples' Schneider, Rhett Miller of the Old 97's, Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, Centro-matic's Will Johnson, Kool and the Gang's remarkable Sir Earl Toon and indie chanteuse Sarah Jaffe, each of whom lends their own recognizable vocal stylings to Dufilho's music.

The recordings are like nothing that Dufilho has ever released prior. Stylistically, the disc bounces from genre to genre, touching on everything from nu disco ("Dizzy Joy" featuring Sir Earl Toon) to experimental psychedelic rock ("Dirty Num Num" featuring Dufilho's wife, Dannette, and his baby's nanny, Letty Gomez). And yet despite this wide range of sonic and lead vocal variation, it hardly feels disjointed, instead coming off as unified through Dufilho's remarkable pop song writing sensibilities. Infectious and endearing, the collection is as fully realized a project as Dufilho has completed to date, a winning batch of songs primed for a variety of listening experiences.

The album John Singer Sergeant will be released April 10.

Sarah Jaffe Announces New Album and Tour

Sarah Jaffe is thrilled to announce the April 24th release of her new full-length studio album, The Body Wins. The new album was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky, Wye Oak, etc.) and is the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut full-length Suburban Nature which earned raves from New York Times, USA Today Pop Candy, Paste, and NPR among others.

As Jaffe gears up for the release of The Body Wins, she will be performing select dates across the US in February and March. She kicks things off on February 5th with Lucinda Williams, Rhett Miller The Civil Wars and more on the Camayo Cruise. Shortly after, Jaffe will head up to NYC for a special show at the Mercury Lounge on February 22nd. Then out to the West Coast where she joins up with Guthrie (Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Jim James, and Anders Parker) for a handful of dates before heading back to Texas for this year's SXSW.

Compilation Highlights

Bob Schneider, winner of 24 Austin Music Awards has released over 11 albums including 2011’s A Perfect Day. He’s had multiple AAA radio hits including “40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet,)” “Let the Light In,” “Honeypot,” and “Metal and Steel.” He’s also contributed songs to a variety of movies-- including The Big Year, Miss Congeniality, and Secrets of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Eleven Hundred Springs is one of the few remaining outlaw country bands. They have celebrated four singles reaching the Top 10 in the Texas Music charts. Earlier this year, they released their eighth album, “Eight the Hard Way”, and are currently working on their next release, expected Feb 2012.

People on Vacation is the new super group composed of Ryan Hamilton from the indie rock band Smile Smile and Jaret Reddick from the pop punk band Bowling for Soup. The two
met while Smile Smile was on tour supporting Bowling for Soup. Their debut record, The Carry On EP, will be out Nov 2011.

In Deep Blue Something’s nine years together they released four major albums, and had three chart topping singles. They were best known for their hit single “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which reached the top five in the U.S. and number one on U.K. charts.

John Dufilho is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of indie rock band The Deathray Davies. Dufilho is also currently a member of Apples in Stereo.

Sara Hickman has produced over 15 albums (for adults and children) throughout her career and has appeared several times on VH-1 and NBC’s “Tonight Show.” Earlier this year, Hickman released her most recent album, The Best of Times which features dozens of artists including Willie Nelson, Rhett Miller, Edie Brickell, Robert Earl Keen and more performing Hickman’s music. She also just finished shooting a made for TV movie, When Angels Sing, whose all-star cast includes Harry Connick, Jr., Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Lyle Lovett.

The Soft Light Orchestra is a collaboration between Adam Pickrell and Decker Sachse. Sachse records and performs under the name Mission to the Sea. Pickrell is a Dallas-based writer, producer and performer.
